Ski Resort Conditions and Weather Forecasts

Vail Snow Report – January 18th 2013

Another super day weather wise on the mountain today at Vail, Colorado. The sun was in full swing right across the area with clouds non-existent.

Overall, skiing was fun today, although there are starting to be quite a few bare patches in the higher traffic areas, especially down low in the back bowls. Some of the lower cat tracks are already on life support with cats pushing snow onto them from wherever they can, but they are fighting a losing battle until more snow falls.

The trick in these conditions is to either ski or board in areas that get enough sun to soften the snow, or not enough sun, so that the surface temperature stays low and keep the snow in good conditions. We encountered some crusty bumps in the back bowls today, though the front side bumps were in much better shape.

If you are a beginner or intermediate, be aware that icy sections may appear on steeper sections as the day progresses, so try to steer clear. For the more advanced, be careful not to get too creative with your lines, especially through the trees as there is not nearly enough snow in many places at the moment.

The forecast hasn’t changed. Sun and warm (slightly above freezing) for the next week, though we expect things to at least start shifting next Thursday. We’ll keep you posted.

Enjoyed this? Here’s some other stuff we think you’ll find is awesome too!
