What Makes the Best Powder Snow – The Science of Snowfall – Part One

If you are like me, you are always on the quest for the best powder snow you can find. But what makes the best snowfall on earth? Joel Gratz from OpenSnow is a weather (and most importantly) snowfall nerd. He has staked his reputation on finding the best snow he can and some of his powder day stories are the fruits of his labor.

Joel has just begun a series where he delves into the science behind that perfect snowfall and we liked it so much, we decided to share it with you here.

Although the video helps us understand the water to snow ratio, it doesn’t yet help us discover where on earth to find this ideal powder. For us, it seems for the most part that the ideal powder is located in a Warren Miller film, though they assure us, that if we can just be in the right place at the right time, we too could require a snorkel to navigate some sweet turns at our favorite resort.

Amazingly, I have skied for several decades, hundreds of days and yet have never experienced true “blower powder”. I too am hoping that with a little more knowledge of the science behind snowfall, that maybe I will better be able to understand when the stars are coming into alignment to produce an epic powder day for me too.
